The comedy industry is always booming with talented individuals, both old favorites and skilled newcomers. There is always something that can make everyone laugh, whether it be grotesque, dark, sexual, political, or light-hearted humor. Whatever you prefer, the best way to enjoy comedy is to see it live and in person, not just through your favorite podcast or a YouTube video. Get out and support your favorite comedian in a live performance for a night to remember. Not sure where to start? Here are five of our favorite comedians that you need to check out ASAP.
Sarah Squirm (aka Sarah Sherman) is head of the comedy troupe Helltrap Nightmare, and has created a name for herself in the industry with her grotesque and unusual sense of humor. If your type of comedy is one that often disgusts your friends and family, this one-of-a-kind girl is for you. She takes her act to the next level with a show that can only be considered performance art, bringing up taboo topics such as body image into her act while making the audience cringe with disgusting imagery. Her reenactments of body fluids need to be seen in person for the full Squirm experience.
Comedian Jessica Singleton is somewhat of a newcomer to the comedy scene, yet has taken the world by storm. Her one-woman show, “Codependent Arising,” produced a 9-show sold-out European tour, and her debut comedy album “Please. Don’t. Leave. Me.” reached #1 on iTunes ahead of many famous, well-qualified comedians. Singleton describes her comedy as a flowing, stream of consciousness delivery with many personal, vulnerable anecdotes strewn within. She has gained popularity through her podcast, “Ignorance is #Blessed” but that’s nothing compared to seeing her perform in person. She is a regular guest at The Comedy Store in Hollywood and can be seen performing there in between her tours.
Cameron Esposito is a self-proclaimed “giant lesbian” who uses her platform to discuss important social and political topics and promote female empowerment and positivity. Her stand-up special “Rape Jokes” is about sexual assault from a survivor’s perspective, and proceeds benefit RAINN, The largest anti-sexual violence organization in the United States. That is just one of the many reasons to support her comedy, the other being that she is an extremely talented individual who is on the cusp of greatness. You may know her from her appearances on shows such as Conan and Chelsea Lately, or the BuzzFeed video series “Ask a Lesbian.”
Joel Kim Booster
Best known for his Comedy Central Stand-Up Presents stand-up special, Joel Kim Booster brings his personal experiences into his quick and clever brand of comedy. Adopted into a conservative, white family in Illinois, Booster often discusses his experience as a gay Asian growing up and finding himself in society. It is clear that, amidst a difficult life, he has found his calling as a great comedian of our time. While his comedy is smart, his biggest strength comes from seeing him in person and the way in which he interacts with the crowd to make an unforgettable show.
A talented athlete, Derrick Tennant thought he had his path in life until he suffered an injury that landed him in a coma. After years of rehabilitation, he has found a new path in life – using comedy to entertain and uplift. Unable to move most of the left side of his body, Tennant pokes fun at his own misfortunes and expresses a sincere sense of gratitude for life in his performances that will leave you feeling inspired.
